Should the Expensive Plans for The California High-Speed Rail Project Continue?

At the end of January 2018, the San Jose Mercury News attempted to derail the California High-Speed Rail project in a written editorial. The newspaper complained that the plan to connect northern and southern California via a high-speed bullet train was billions of dollars over budget. The California High-Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA) aims to connect LA to San Francisco via bullet train by 2029, with the first part of the line between San Jose and Bakersfield done by 2025.

The newspaper’s complaints are warranted. It’s estimated that the Central Valley section of the rail project, according to the CHSRA, will cost about $2.8 billion more than originally planned. The project as a whole is estimated to cost around $98 billion, but it could also jump to an estimated $118 billion over time.

Under a California proposition “Proposition 1A” that California residents voted for back in 2008, the estimate for the railway project was only $40 billion. Both the LA Times and The Mercury News originally endorsed 1A, but today they believe that mismanagement, disorganization, and simple bad luck has resulted in the train plans to be financially failing, and that an audit should at least be called. Some parties, including State Senator Scott Weiner, are defending the railway plans, saying that most large-scale city projects will always go over budget, especially for railway plans.

All of this aside, California residents who are aware of these railway plans are bothered that the budget has not been stably set. If you’re a California resident and want to keep updated with these plans, periodically visit our blog. Also, don’t hesitate to contact us for a free consultation.
